Ingredients in Vanilla Matcha Latte

  • Matcha – this recipe features matcha so be sure to choose high-quality matcha that is organic and sourced from Japan! Matcha should be a bright green and perfectly fine powder.
  • Vanilla Bean Paste – using a vanilla bean paste is perfect for this recipe. It contains SO MUCH FLAVOR without any of the alcoholic taste that sometimes follows when using vanilla extracts. Most vanilla bean pastes also contain black flecks from the vanilla bean pods and it adds such a pretty touch.
  • Milk – for a creamy latte use full-fat milk. You can also use non-dairy milk with great results. I’ve used almond milk and oat milk in this recipe and the outcome was delicious!
  • Honey – honey is the perfect sweetener for matcha lattes. Its naturally sweet, floral, and earthy goodness compliments the matcha in the most beautiful and tasteful way.
  • Water – the water should never be overlooked especially when making tea! Use good-tasting water such as filtered or spring water.

  • The perfect temperature for steamed milk is 150°F. This can be achieved on the stovetop using a candy thermometer.
  • Handheld wands work perfectly for frothing milk. Just lower your wand into the milk and gently pump up and down until you hear air being sucked in. Then angle your wand to create a whirlpool. Total time takes only about 20-30 seconds.

How to Make Matcha Tea without a Whisk

Matcha tea is traditionally made by whisking matcha and water with a bamboo whisk. Matcha powder easily clumps and this method has made perfectly smooth cups of tea for centuries. However, if you do not have a bamboo whisk there are two options I have found that work well enough to make matcha lattes. The first is using the blender. Start by adding matcha and water to your blender and pulsing on low until smooth. The second method is to use a blender bottle. Add water and matcha to your blender bottle. Be sure to include the blender ball wire whisk. Shake vigorously until combined.

What is Matcha

Matcha is a true tea that comes from the tea plant Camellia sinensis. It is unique from other teas as the entire tea leaf is consumed. Matcha is grown using a special process where the leaves are shaded, causing the plant to produce fewer tannins and more amino acids and chlorophyll, giving their leaves an extra bright color. The tea is carefully harvested and steamed and dried. It is then stone-ground into a very fine powder and carefully packaged.

How to Choose the right Matcha for a Matcha Latte

For the best latte chose a high-quality matcha powder.

  • Bright color.
  • From Japan.
  • Stored in an air-tight container.
  • Organic.
  • Smooth with no visible granules.
  • Will be bright and vibrant when prepared.

Matcha Health Benefits

Matcha is considered a superfood and is full of health benefits. Many studies have been done with matcha and some have indicated positive impacts on the skin, for weight loss, concentration, bone health, cancer prevention, heart health, and even diabetes. Matcha is a true tea that contains caffeine. But unlike coffee or other high caffeinated drinks which may create an “energy high” and an energy crash, matcha contains an amino acid called L-theanine that gives a slow release of energy over several hours.
