Spring Activities For Kids: 21 Entertaining Indoor and Outdoor Ideas (2024)

Inside: Spring time weather is unpredictable but don’t let that stop your entertainment! This list has 21 engaging indoor and outdoor spring activities for kids they’ll love!

After months of snow, slush, and freezing temperatures, the first signs of spring have finally arrived!

(I’m not a huge fan of winter so I kinda feel like Bambi when he sees a blade of grass popping out of the snow and there’s suddenly a light at the end of the tunnel…spring is coming!)

Spring’s great because you can finally let your kids roam outside without worrying about anyone getting frostbite!

This is also an exciting time of year for your kids because they can witness all this new growth that’s happening in nature, (like with flowers and trees) and new life, (with baby animals and birds being born).

We were really lucky a couple of years ago when a Robin built a nest under our deck. Our basem*nt window was practically eye level with the nest, so my kids got a front row seat to this bird family.

They watched the parents feeding the babies, watched the babies grow, and then got to see them leave the nest. It couldn’t have worked out more perfectly and my kids were fascinated by it!

Now that the weather is getting nicer, you’re probably eager to get your kids out of the house and let all them release all that pent up energy from being mostly inside for the last several months.

Of course as much as you and your kids may want to get outside, get some fresh air, and explore nature, spring is also the season of sun and rain.

But the rain doesn’t have to damper your fun!

These engaging indoor and outdoor activities ensure your kids will never get bored no matter what the weather is like!

21 Spring Activities For Kids

Hunt for 4 leaf clovers

If you guys find one make sure to have your kids make a wish.

Make a leprechaun trap

Once you make one have the kids leave it out overnight and put some fake gold coins in it as evidence a leprechaun was there!

Go on an Easter egg hunt

You can do this inside your house or in a local egg hunt event. (We do both and the kids love it!) Just be sure if you’re going to a local event, they’ll have enough eggs for all the participants. You don’t want to go to one where all the parents and big kids grab all the eggs first leaving your little kids with nothing. I’ve seen many Facebook posts of crying kids because of this!

Jump in puddles

Usually you’re telling your kids NOT to jump in puddles so having them put on their rain boots and giving them the go ahead to splash away to their hearts content will be super exciting for them.

Make a play garden

You can put some dirt in a bin, give them some gardening tools, and have fake flowers your kids can plant. Or have them grab plants, sticks, and rocks from around the yard to put in their play garden. Or you can set up a small garden in your yard that your kids can play in.

Grow an indoor plant

This is a fun way for kids to be a part of the planting and growing process. You’ll want to choose a fast growing plant, (like radishes, beans, and chives) so your kids can see the results quickly!

Make a fairy garden

You can do this if you have a big enough indoor plant to put your fairy garden, or in your yard. It gets your kids imagination going and you guys can tell stories about the fairies who live in the garden, which promotes creativity too!

Blow bubbles outside

I’ve never met a kid who doesn’t love bubbles…I should seriously invest in a bubble machine because my kids love running after them and catching them all the time, (even the dog gets in on it!). This is a good activity to do outdoors cause there’s room to run around and if the bubbles spill it’s no big deal.

Make a bird house

Try building a bird house together. You guys can hang it up in the yard and watch to see if any birds make a home there. If you’re not handy, you can always get these easy birdhouse kits for kids.

Play hide and seek

A great activity for indoors and outdoors.

Go on a walk through a forest preserve

There’s lots to do on a walk through the forest preserve! You can have the kids go on a nature themed scavenger hunt, collect nature items, watch for birds and animals, feed some ducks, and more.

Paint rocks

You can find some on a walk and take them home and paint them, (my kids love painting rocks!). Once they dry, you can set them somewhere inside or outside to admire.

Play in the rain

Again, it’s probably not often you tell your kids that they can play in the rain. So anytime you deviate from your usual rules, your kids will be really excited!

Go to a petting zoo

This is great for animal lovers! It gives your kids a chance to interact with animals they don’t normally see on a regular basis.

Go to the park

A classic for a reason. After the winter ends, there’s always a newfound excitement for the park. Take advantage of that by letting your kids run around and play!

Go on a treasure hunt

You can make the treasure whatever you want and hide it. Then give your kids clues, (or a map if they’re older) to see if they can find it. You can do this inside or outside.

Play a sport outside

You can play soccer, baseball, basketball, anything really. Just get outside and be active! If your kids aren’t old enough to play sports, you can roll a ball or kick it around with them.

Make an art picture with nature items

Your kids can collect nature items, (plants, sticks, flowers, small rocks, feathers, etc.) and glue it to some paper to make a nature masterpiece.

Make a pine cone bird feeder

Take a pinecone, put some peanut butter around it, and dip it in bird seed. Have your kids help you hang it up somewhere in your yard and watch the birds, (and probably squirrels) feast!

Make a glue picture

Traditionally when we make pictures out of glue, we shake some glitter over it and then shake the excess glitter off. Let it dry and you have a pretty picture you can hang up. But for this activity, instead of using glitter, use seeds! You can try bird seed or plant seeds, (or try multiple kinds of seeds).

Fly a kite

Another oldie but goodie. You can enjoy showing your kids how to fly a kite, or if they’re too little, have them run after the kite as you fly it!
