What organ does pantoprazole affect? ›

Pantoprazole is in a class of medications called proton-pump inhibitors. It works by decreasing the amount of acid made in the stomach.

Pantoprazole may increase your risk of having fractures of the hip, wrist, and spine. This is more likely if you are 50 years of age and older, if you receive high doses of this medicine, or use it for one year or more. Call your doctor right away if you have severe bone pain or are unable to walk or sit normally.

Pantoprazole reduces the amount of acid your stomach makes. It's used for heartburn, acid reflux and gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) – GORD is when you keep getting acid reflux. It's also taken to prevent and treat stomach ulcers.

Serious stomach conditions may occur while taking this medicine. Check with your doctor immediately if you or your child has stomach cramps, bloated feeling, watery and severe diarrhea which may also be bloody sometimes, fever, nausea or vomiting, or unusual tiredness or weakness.

Long-term use of PPIs may cause morbidity, including cardiovascular disease and dementia. Physicians should assist patients in reducing or stopping their use of PPIs with lifestyle changes and other antacid medications (H2 blockers and neutralizing antacids) that have no associated cardiovascular risk.

Generally, both omeprazole and pantoprazole provide safe options to help manage acid reflux and other stomach acid-related conditions. In rare cases, individuals may develop more severe side effects with omeprazole or pantoprazole.

PPIs are considered the better option if you have chronic (long-lasting) issues with stomach acid production.

Interactions between your drugs

If you are iron-deficient or have anemia, you should talk to your doctor before using multivitamin, prenatal together with pantoprazole. By reducing stomach acid, pantoprazole may reduce the absorption of iron and make multivitamin, prenatal less effective in treating your condition.

Can I drink coffee with pantoprazole? ›

Pantoprazole does not interact with coffee. However, to better control GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), you should cut down on the amount of caffeinated drinks, such as coffee, tea, cola products, and alcohol.

Pantoprazole-food interactions

Certain foods can raise gastric pH and make one more prone to experiencing symptoms of acid reflux (GERD). To help keep the stomach acid level low, avoid foods like citrus fruits, tomatoes, chocolate, and spicy foods.

You may have weight gain while you're taking pantoprazole oral tablets. Both weight gain and weight loss were reported after the drug's initial studies were done. Additionally, you may gain weight if you have edema (swelling) or bloating, which are possible side effects of pantoprazole.

Pantoprazole therapy is associated with a low rate of transient and asymptomatic serum aminotransferase elevations and is a rare cause of clinically apparent liver injury.

Though it's rare, pantoprazole can cause an allergic reaction. Symptoms may include rash, swelling, and breathing problems. This allergic reaction can progress to interstitial nephritis, a kidney disorder that can lead to kidney failure.

The onset of action is rapid, and the maximal effect occurs between 2 and 6 hours after drug administration. Pantoprazole is also metabolized in the liver, predominantly by CYP2C19 demethylation and sulfation.

Vit B12 levels were observed to be significantly lower in Omeprazole patients (54.12%) than in Pantoprazole patients (45.87%). A vitamin B12 deficiency is 0.5 times more likely in patients taking PPIs (OR = 0.560, 95% CI = 0.444–0.707), as shown in Table 2.
